How to care for your fresh tattoo.
Typically I recommend Hexderm adhesive bandage, which is included in the price of your tattoo.
For Hexderm users:
First 24 Hours- Please leave bandage on for the first 24 hours. Tattoos may get leaky and “gunky” under the bandage- that IS absolutely normal. If bandage leaks, wipe with a clean paper towel.
Changing bandage- In the shower or under warm running water, slowly peel away bandage and clean with a gentle anti bacterial soap. Let the tattoo air dry completely and then apply second bandage. DO NOT apply any creams or ointments under bandage. Take off after 3-4 days and apply non scented white lotion as needed for the next few weeks.
This bandage is water resistant so showering is ok, however swimming and soaking are not recommended whatsoever.
If you experience out of the ordinary redness, tenderness or itchiness please contact me immediately.
Traditional Aftercare:
Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo!
When you get home: Remove bandage within 1-2 hours after getting your tattoo. Do not re-bandage.
Cleaning your tattoo:
Wash your tattoo with an antibacterial liquid soap. I really like Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soaps. Be gentle, do not use a washcloth or anything that will irritate your tattoo. Only use your hands.
Gently pat your tattoo dry with a paper towel and allow to air dry completely. Do not rub, or use a fabric with a rough surface.
Applying ointment to your tattoo: For the first TWO - THREE DAYS Rub a small amount of plain non scented ointment (aquaphor or A&d) on your tattoo AFTER YOU HAVE CLEANED AND DRIED IT. Always use clean hands and make sure to rub the lotion in so that it is not shiny, or greasy– you want the thinnest amount possible. Pat off any excess ointment with a clean paper towel. Do not use Vaseline, petroleum or neosporin. Wash, dry and apply lotion 5-6 times daily, as needed. If you had any skin sensitivity or allergies to ointments, you can just start with plain lotion.
After that, I recommend just a plain unscented lotion such as lubriderm, eucerin, or cetaphil. If you are diabetic please use Gold Bond diabetic lotion.
Wear clean, soft, loose fitting clothing over your tattoo for the first 2 weeks– nothing abrasive or irritating.
Do not pick, scratch, peel, slap, rub or irritate your tattoo. You can shower, but you may not soak your tattoo for 2 weeks. No swimming, soaking, hot tub, oceans, lakes, ect.
Avoid exposing your tattoo to the sunlight while it is healing, after that you must use sun block to ensure your tattoo looks as beautiful as the day you got it.
Do not wear abrasive materials, jewelry, or shoes that rub against your tattoo.
Do not let anyone touch your tattoo.
Beware of gym equipment, wash it well before using it.
Elevating your tattoo while healing can help reduce swelling
Avoid pet hair and saliva on your new tattoo.
I offer free touch ups for the first 6 months, however I am not responsible for any issues regarding unfollowed aftercare instructions.
